Back in September, Jake and I agreed to take a friend's dog in as a foster as he was facing euthanasia in his previous home. He was doing really great at our place, and we hoped to place him in a new home soon. Friday, October 6th, he was playing in the yard with my another dog and came inside limping on his hind left leg. For the remainder of the weekend, he did not put any weight on his leg. I am lucky enough to work at a veterinary hospital, so I brought him into work Monday to see the doctor. X-Rays and doctors exam confirmed a CCL tear. I cried on and off for the remainder of my shift that day.
Some dogs can remain comfortable with medical management and not have to be put through surgery. Unfortunately, to this day, Bru does not use that leg. Surgery is the only option for him at this time - and since we took him on as a private foster, we are solely responsible for the cost of this. Originally estimated at 4-5K for the surgery alone (This does not include all of the medication he has been on since the tear to do our best at keeping him comfortable, x-rays to confirm the tear, cost of the exam, etc.) it has been a difficult decision to make, but we must move forward with the surgery as this is likely his only hope at adoption in the future. I am fortunate enough to receive an employee discount on some of estimate, but it still leaves us with an estimate of $3100 to $3900. (Please see photo below.)
Though we did not want to resort to a GoFundMe, many friends and family have asked for a way to donate to his surgery. We are extremely thankful to have an amazing support system willing to help us in this unexpected time. Bru is expected to have the surgery in 2 weeks, and will have a long road of recovery ahead of him. He is a great, adorable, and loving dog, and deserves this second to find his forever family!
