Help Us Tell the Story of the Brunnenburg Legacy
Donation protected
We are a team of filmmakers and creatives raising funds to support a documentary film project capturing the legacy of Brunnenburg Castle, its owners the De Rachewiltz family, and their dedication to preserving agriculture and sustainability. Our team is: Award-winning documentary filmmaker Mark Flagler; video producer Stephen Moody; Award-winning author Terra Ellen McVoy; and consultant Philip Ackerman Leist.
The educational programs at Brunnenburg have hosted hundreds of students from multiple universities and organizations since 1975. The education and experience shared here — along with the continual work done throughout the year in the agricultural museum and surrounding farm and vineyards — expands the lives of all engaged. In the background of these explorations is the family’s commitment to creating an environment and community dedicated to exploring the concept of Paideuma, “the tangle or complex of the inrooted ideas of any period.” In short, Brunnenburg and its family are a valued treasure of the SudTirol area.

Mary, the eldest and matriarch of the family, is 98 years old! She has dedicated her life to the literary work of her father, Ezra Pound, an American poet and critic who was a major figure in the modernist poetry movement of the mid 20th century. And with her son Siegfried, and grandsons, Michi and Nik, they collectively teach and host groups from around the world.
About Our Team:
Everyone on our team has a direct, intimate connection to Brunnenburg. We are filmmakers, writers, and passionate about sustainability and creating community. We lived in the farmhouse onsite, worked on the farm vineyards and orchards, and spent other days in the study of European agricultural traditions and local Tyrolean life. It was very much one of those life experiences that changes how you think about the world, and where real meaning and connection come from. That is the driver of this project, to capture those practices and stories for a wider community to understand how valuable this intimate, unique place enriches everyone who enters.

- Preserving the fading ways of the traditional mountain farmers
- Environmental education centered around mountain ecology & culture, sustainable agriculture, and organic fruit & wine production
- Literature, creative writing, and critical thinking amid the family’s archives of twentieth century arts & literary culture
- International and interpersonal community building
The De Rachewiltz family has a fascinating lineage, and the castle holds centuries of cultural and historical significance. The funds raised will be utilized to cover production costs (including filming equipment, crew expenses, travel arrangements, and post-production editing) to ensure this captivating tale comes to life and is shared with audiences worldwide.
