Bruh Tesfa Youth Development Centre is a place of opportunity. Situated in the town of Adigrat, Ethiopia Bruh Tesfa strives to live up to its namesake and provide opportunity for a “bright hope” for the youth of Adigrat. Nestled in the hills of Tigray, the northernmost region of Ethiopia, Adigrat is beautiful a town categorized by extreme poverty. In 2007 Bruh Tesfa was established by the Missionaries of Africa and has continued to provide support for the community ever since its inception.  Under the direction of Father Paul Reilly, M.AFr. the primary goal of Bruh Tesfa is to be a positive resource for all young people in the community, especially those from disadvantaged homes. We strive to do this in a number of ways. Firstly, Bruh Tesfa is a place where kids can be kids. We have a beautiful compound equipped with basketball and volleyball courts, a soccer field, table tennis, a music room, a television room, a well-stocked library and a beautiful garden. The grounds are open daily and are available for all youth to come and enjoy, free of charge. In addition to providing a safe space for recreation Bruh Tesfa also provides resources to aide academic achievement. Classes are offered in English and French language skills and computer skills as well as regular workshops given on topics ranging from professional development to health.



 Another problem facing the youth of Adigrat is the ability to complete secondary education. The majority of families are situated in remote villages far away from the local secondary schools. For many young people there are three options: walk hours to school each day, stay in a cheap rent home often in poor and unsanitary condition, or lastly drop out of school. Bruh Tesfa recognized that this was a huge challenge for the local youth and opened a boys hostel in 2008 and a subsequently a girls hostel in 2015. These hostels provide a safe and clean place to live for students in their final year of secondary school. The hostel program selects students from poor family backgrounds, who live in remote villages with no secondary school and who have shown high academic potential thus far in their studies. Bruh Tesfa provides lodging, meals, school supplies and any medical treatment that is necessary.

 Bruh Tesfa has been working tirelessly to better the life of the youth of Adigrat for the past nine years. The community center, with the support of the Missionaries of Africa,  has brought running water free of charge to the surrounding families, clothes and toiletries to those in need, classes and tutorials, and a safe place to play that is unlike any other resource in Adigrat. Donations to Bruh Tesfa would help to continue to provide for the youth of Adigrat as well as the community as a whole.
