Connecticut Man Contracts Flesh-Eating Bacteria After Swimming at Hammonasset

Hello All,

We need your help! On June 30th Bruce was admitted to The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain for what we were told was being a bit delirious. Upon arriving they noticed his right leg was looking black and blue and was bleeding. On July 2nd we were told he needed emergency surgery, Bruce had necrotizing fascitis and this flesh eating bacteria was eating away the soft tissue in his leg. We were told he contracted this through s cut on his knee and a possible trip to the beach the few days before. This surgery included removing all the skin from the knee down to his ankle except for a small thin strip on the back of his leg, and thus leaving the bone exposed in the front.

At first the surgery, it was deemed a success, they removed the bad areas but the leg was saved. Bruce was put into ICU where they monitored him. Over the course of time, they noticed some other areas of issue, on his leg and arm and removed those areas as well.

The right leg became a bigger issue when the next step was to prepare the leg to be able to get a skin graft. Bone cannot be exposed and needs to be covered by muscle in order to have a skin graft done. On July 15th this was when a second surgery happened where they had to cut the tendon on the back of his right leg, and release some of the muscle so they could flap it over his bone to cover it. This was done and it was a waiting game to see if there would be any issues.

Two days later we were told that the "muscle flap" surgery did not work and the muscle for some reason was dying. He would require another surgery to see if there was a blockage of blood flow. On July 19th, this surgery happened, where they did find a blockage and put 3 stents in his leg, which helped. Now it was back to the waiting game to see if the muscle would get better.

On July 21st he was finally moved out of being in ICU for about 19 days. We had some hope, but unfortunately, the bad news kept coming. The muscle that was used to flap over the bone had some areas that needed to be removed again, and this left the bone exposed again. The Dr's used a synthetic skin they explained to us to try and cover the bone, where we would be back to the waiting to see if this synthetic would take to his body.

On July 29th, we got the bad news that the leg could not be saved and surgery for amputation was scheduled for Thursday, August 1st.

After 37 days in the hospital, on August 6th Bruce was moved to a rehab facility where he will have to learn to live his new life as an amputee.

We need help to cover medical costs, rehab, prosthetic costs, and living costs. Any little bit would help.

Thank you!
