Urgent Sewer Repair Needed for Paralyzed Retiree's Home

Hi, my name is Bruce Faber, and I’m reaching out to ask for help with an urgent repair to my home in Walnut Creek, California.

I’ve been paralyzed from the neck down for 52 years, since a diving accident in 1973. My home has been carefully adapted to support my daily needs and preserve my independence. It’s not just where I live—it’s where I thrive.

I’m now retired and living on a fixed income, which makes covering unexpected, major expenses nearly impossible on my own.

Just this month, on April 9, 2025, I had to replace my 35-year-old deck, which cost $45,066.62 and had to be financed. Before I even had a chance to recover from that, I was hit with a severe sewer and drainage emergency that required immediate action.

The repair work is already underway and expected to be completed by Friday, April 18, 2025.

The issue began under the house but quickly escalated: my original sewer line was made of asbestos, and the city would not allow it to be reconnected unless it was entirely replaced—a legal and safety requirement. There was no option to delay or patch the system. It had to be done immediately.

A licensed company, Rooter Hero Plumbing, provided a detailed estimate for:

- Full horizontal waste line repipe under the raised foundation

- Cleanouts for future access and maintenance

- Sewer lateral pipe burst replacement (95 feet to the city main)

- Permits, inspections, and public works coordination

- Street surface repair and full cleanup of existing sewage

- The work includes a 10-year warranty

The total cost of the sewer repair alone is $51,390.69.

While I am managing the cost of the deck separately, this second major expense so soon after has left me financially strangled. I’m only asking for help to cover this sewer repair amount.
