Help Us Bring Little Library Boxes to Brooklyn!

Hi, I’m Dessa Carroll, founder of Brown Babies N’ Books, a grassroots literacy and wellness initiative centering Black and Brown families through storytime events, community gatherings, and cultural connection. Since launching in March 2025, I’ve been organizing storytime pop-ups across Brooklyn—completely self-funded—with the mission of affirming our children through books that reflect who they are.

Now, I’m dreaming bigger—and I need your help.

The Vision:

I’m launching a Little Library Box project across Brooklyn neighborhoods to increase access to children’s books written by BIPOC authors. Each mini library will be:

• Hand-painted by Brooklyn-based Black & Brown artists

• Installed in community spaces for families to freely borrow and share books

• Marked with a custom plaque honoring its artist and purpose

• Filled with stories that reflect the beauty, culture, and voices of our communities

Before the boxes are installed, they will be featured in a gallery showcase, where families can view the art, connect with local creators, and celebrate literacy as a form of love and liberation.

What the Funds Will Support:

• Purchasing Little Free Library boxes and installation materials

• Custom plaque engraving for each box

• Books by BIPOC authors to stock the libraries

• Stipends for local artists designing each box

• Marketing & outreach to spread the word

• Event materials for the gallery showing (Fall 2025)

Why This Matters:

These boxes will serve as lasting pillars of joy, representation, and access—especially for families in underserved areas. Every book placed is an opportunity for a child to feel seen, empowered, and inspired.

While I’m currently in the process of making Brown Babies N’ Books an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit, this has been a labor of love funded out of pocket. With your support, we can bring this vision to life and plant seeds of literacy and legacy all across Brooklyn.
