Brothers In Need - One in ICU, the other Disabled
Hi, my name is Sam. I am fundraising for my mother, Chris, who is 71 years old.
In early March 2021, my bother Don was taken to Philadelphia for heart surgery and/or transplant. At the time, my mother decided to fly down and stay in the area to support him. My mother is the primary caretaker of my 21 year old bother Danny, who is autistic and has cerebral palsy - he requires 24 hour care. Danny's care plan has him with a teacher-provider for 8 hours a day and then my mother is a payed care giver for 8 hours a day. Due to Danny's age, he is on disability and aid from the state of Alaska. This aid is given as long as he is in Alaska with some allowance for travel. After 30 days out of state this aid was cut off. My mother thinks at this point due to complications with Don she will need to stay in Philadelphia through June so she can help get him home to State College were he lives. That being said, my mother is out of pocket for her hotel (which the Hilton Homewood Suites has helped by giving a discount on), food each day for her and Danny, and a hired caretaker for Danny while my mother spends time at the hospital (which under COVID restrictions will only allow one visitor per patient).
Danny's caregiver is payed out-of-pocket by my mother, who is no longer being payed for the covered time she had.
Danny's public food assistance of $300 a month has stopped due to not being in Alaska.
On top of the loss of money, my mother has also been paying bills in Alaska as well as my brother's expenses from State College were he lives with two dogs.
My wife and I have been taking care of my mother's house and property, working full time, and home-schooling our kids.
