My father– Brother James as many of you know him– has worked for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation for the past 27 years.
Though he's 76 years old, dad wakes up at 4 AM every morning to go to work. Every day, he's the first person to arrive and prepares the building so it's ready to open to the public at 7 AM.
He is so dedicated to his job that last year, he walked through New York City's biggest snowstorm ever on record (27.5 inches high), to arrive at work on time so he could open it up for others who'd want to seek refuge from the storm there. It was wild.
He's finally seeking to retire in May with his pension from the city after almost 30 years of service.
Now, only four weeks out from retiring, dad gets told by the NYC Employee Retirement office that due to a rule that places a ceiling on the amount of hours that can count towards someone's pension, despite his thousands of hours spent working for the city, he won't get to count /all/ his hours towards his pension. This leaves a deficit, and means if he wants to receive his full pension, he needs to buy it back.
Dad is a also a cancer-survivor. He went through treatment and came back to working full-time only three months later. He has introduced hundreds of people to Islam and is one of the kindest, most hard-working people you'll ever meet.
He's has survived cancer, but now this is his second big battle.
Help us help him get started on this next stage of his life. He's already talking about his plans to work-out more to get in shape, and working more on his music.
Our working deadline is May 16th. Making this happen for my family would be the GREATEST birthday present ever. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
