Brother Facing Medical Neglect in Jail-Help w Bail
Donation protected
Dear friends and supporters:
On Christmas Day, my older brother was arrested with 3 nonviolent charges and taken to jail in the DFW area. His bail is set at $30,000 but my family and I must pay $5,000 to get him out of jail until his court hearing. We need your help because, after the holidays, we can't afford his bail and we can't afford a good lawyer.
It is urgent that we get my brother out of jail as soon as possible because he is being medically neglected and he is at high risk of contracting COVID-19; prisons and jails are currently hot spots for the virus and he could face very serious complications and even death should he contract it. Currently, my brother is dealing with non-epileptic seizures, a leaking heart valve, and a fractured L5 vertebrae in his back, so he has ongoing appointments with cardiologists and neurologists. For his first 6 days in jail, the medical staff denied him medications for his heart condition and it took them 3 weeks to provide him the proper medications for his back injury. Being in jail has halted his journey to recovery and if these issues continue to go unresolved, I risk losing my brother. In fact, in early December his conditions caused his heart to spontaneously stop and he was briefly dead. The seriousness of this situation can not be emphasized more. To make matters worse, he was denied a mask every day until Jan. 5th despite several cell blocks recently having COVID-19 outbreaks and several of his cellmates having the virus multiple times before. Because of his conditions and the amount of men in his block, my brother desperately needs to be released so that he will no longer be in danger.
Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. My brother is a big-hearted person who cares deeply about social justice reform, especially as it relates to the carceral state. Following the protests that erupted after George Floyd's death, my brother got involved with a social justice organization in DFW and regularly attended protests, helped with organizing efforts, and contributed hours to his community cleaning up trash and other debris following protests. He diligently contributed to these efforts until his brain and heart conditions got worse and he was no longer able to work or drive. Now, he needs these communities to fight for him.
I am setting the goal for this fundraiser at $5,000 but any dollar more that we raise can help toward hiring my brother a lawyer that can help him. Any amount will help my brother and my family through this tremendously difficult time.
Thank you in advance for your donations <3
