Brophy's Irma Fund
Donation protected
Hurricane Irma hit Florida very hard. My mom, a life long Central Florida resident, said she has never seen so many fallen trees. Some of my family members are STILL without power, 10 days later. Thankfully, everyone that I know is safe.
The reason for this fund is to help my sister Meg and her family. During the storm, a HUGE tree fell on the house that they bought only two months ago. Her husband, Shane, ran to see what had happend. The tree's main impact hit the garage side of their home, crushing both of their cars and severing the gas line. He turned off the gas and called the Fire Department. It took the Firemen over an hour to get their family of 4 (their youngest just 6 days old) and their dog to my parents house less than 2 miles away only after cutting through two trees and rerouting because of downed power lines.
But the damage to their house and cars isn't the worst part. Their homeowner's insurance company has told them that they will have to wait a minimum of 5 weeks for a structural engineer to come out and inspect their home to find out if it is safe for them to live in. While they wait, the company has said that they will only cover a hotel if they find out that their home isn't safe. Thank goodness they have family locally because they are basically homeless!
Their car insurance company sent out an assesor who said that one car is totaled (which they bought earlier this summer) and the other car has thousands of dollars worth of damage. The worst part is only one car is covered for this type of situation.
These details aren't even the whole story, but it is enough to give an idea of what kind of stress this family is dealing with. They were never contacted by any of their insurance providers. They have been calling twice everyday to find out what can be done.
Meg and Shane's financial burden in this crisis is substantial. We're hoping to raise $10,000 to offset deductibles and out of pocket auto repairs.
Thank you for taking the time to checkout this page. I will do my best to post any updates here.
