We are Gyrchel Moore and Lisa Bruno, co-owners and directors of Brooklyn Children’s House. Brooklyn Children's House Montessori School is an in-home early childhood education program for children starting at (or near) 22 months - 4 years old, founded in the spring of 2018. After more than a decade of collective experience in larger school settings, we recognized the need for a more intimate, home-like environment that prioritizes a child's individual interests over rigid schedules. Inspired by Maria Montessori's original "Casa dei bambini," or "The Children's House," in Italy, we created a nurturing space for Brooklyn's youngest learners.

In 2022, after closing our doors due to the Covid Pandemic, we were able to reopen in part through a Child Care Desert Grant offered by the state of New York. It set us up wonderfully, but unfortunately, the grant ended in 2023. We wholeheartedly support public programs like 3K; however, the DOE has not accepted any new 3K contracts from community-based organizations like ours since 2021, before we reopened after Covid. Without additional funding we've had to raise the cost of private tuition to keep up with rising costs.

This Fall, BCH has hit a difficult financial position due to low enrollment dropping over 50% this school year. Despite wonderful and thoughtful reviews from parents, hosting events, and increasing our advertising we have few prospects for enrollment. At this point, we simply are not generating the revenue needed to cover our costs. We have been able to remain solvent since the decline with savings while having to pause payroll. The reality is without a significant change we will be unable to cover costs. We are determined to find a way to finish this school year strong and continue providing the nurturing, quality education we're known for through this school year and beyond.
