Brooke's Books: Building Readers and Futures with Decodables

Donation protected
The mission of Brooke’s Books is to bring decodable books to Myrtle Beach Elementary School's library, helping young readers build confidence and fluency through the proven methods of the Science of Reading. By putting the right books in the hands of children, we aim to foster a love of reading and strengthen our community one reader at a time.

According to the last SC Ready State English test, only 69.9% of the district's children scored a C or higher. This means that 69.9% of kids in Horry County are reading at their grade level. Brooke's Books' goal is to improve this issue.

My sister, Cameron, was diagnosed with Dyslexia in 1st grade. Everything that involved reading was so hard for my sister, and she was way behind her grade level in reading. Today, Cameron is 15 years old, and can read without struggle and takes Honors English classes, finishing with A's and B's. All of this can be owed to her reading decodable books.

What are decodable books?
  • Decodable books are simple, phonics-based books that use words children can sound out with the letter-sound patterns they've already learned.
  • They build confidence, reinforce phonics skills, and help young readers become more fluent by letting them read successfully without guessing or memorizing.
  • They have books for each grade level, including short chapter books with certain sounds and letter combinations each books focus on such as: sh (as in ship), vowel sounds, gn (as in gnat), and much more.

These books would help struggling kids at the elementary school improve their reading skills, which are crucial to have. I have seen the way these books have helped my sister, and believe every child should have the resources to improve their reading.

I have been working with Myrtle Beach Elementry School to find the decodable books that would best suit the children's needs. Librarian, Amy Rhodes, and I have put together a list of board approved decodable books. The inital cost is $800 for our first group of books. We are looking to get these into the library as soon as possible so I need your help.

It is my ask that you contribute to this fundraiser for education. Every child deserves to have the resources and the help to improve their education.
