Brooke's Trach & Airway Reconstructive Surgery
Donation protected
Brooke Burgamy was first admitted to the pediatric ICU on Sunday, November 24, 2019 with what the doctors thought was a bad case of croup cough. This was Brooke's fourth time coming to the ER for croup cough related symptoms and her third time being admitted to the children's hospital. It turns out that most children only become diagnosed with the croup once or twice in their lives and four times was far too many. Brooke has had a strong "wheeze" when she breathes and it seems to always become worse at night. The doctors at first thought that she might have allergy related croup or asthma and she has been using a nebulizer and other inhalers to help combat her condition. Unfortunately, her wheeze persisted and her troubled breathing continued.
Shortly after being admitted to the ICU on the 24th, the doctors performed a bronchial scope on Brooke to check on the status of her lungs. While the results of the scope showed that her lungs are in fact very healthy and show no signs of asthma, Brooke had a severe adverse reaction to the anesthesia used during the procedure and it caused her overall condition to worsen.
After allowing her body to rest and recover in the hospital over the Thanksgiving weekend, Brooke had another procedure on Tuesday, December 3rd. One of the doctors believed Brooke had some sort of obstruction in her throat and another scope & CT scan of her vocal cords/trachea was scheduled. The results of the scope showed that Brooke is suffering from Congenital Subglottic Stenosis and will need to have a tracheotomy as soon as possible. Brooke's tracheotomy surgery is currently scheduled for Friday, December 6th in the afternoon.
Brooke will need to live with a trach in her throat throughout the winter and will need to have Airway reconstructive surgery at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.
We have created this GoFundMe page to help raise funds for the costs of Brooke's multi-week hospital stays, scopes & CT scans, tracheotomy, vocal cord reconstruction. We also ask that you continue to keep Brooke, along with her parents, Austyn and Steve in your prayers.
Thank you and God bless,
