This is Brooke. She is a fun-loving, smart adorable little girl who spent her 6th birthday in the hospital. Brooke was misdiagnosed at 5 months old with Portal Vein Thrombosis after a nearly fatal bleed which she suffered again at 9 months. She also had more than 20 hepatocellular adenomas (liver tumors) that were positive with cancer cells and multiple surgeries. Brooke received a liver transplant in June that she had been waiting for most of her life. Her family was ecstatic to head to Stanford Children’s Hospital when a replacement organ was located. At that time it was found that she was born without a portal vein and had a syndrome called Adams Oliver Syndrome a rare condition that affects the development of blood vessels during development. Little did they know that this would begin months of an emotional roller coaster with ups and downs pertaining to her transplant. Brooke has battled organ rejection 2x now, 4 viral blood Bourne infections and blood pooling and clotting in her portal vein. Which is completely clotted off at this time. She is currently on a blood thinner called Lovenox after being in the ICU on a heparin drip for a month in August. Her family is emotionally and financially drained. I work with her mother, Summer Head, at our local hospital here in Redding. She has been staying with Brooke at Stanford Children’s Hospital for nearly 4 months now. She and her husband, Austin (a Cal Fire Firefighter), have been trying to juggle staying with Brooke along with caring for their son who’s 2, and maintaining their residence here in Redding which is 5 hours away from the hospital if traffic is good. They just want to return to a normal life and to watch their children grow up together. Some days are very dark and they fear for their little one’s life while others offer more hope. They are currently trying to collaborate with UCSF where she may be able to get an alternative treatment for the clotting which is causing major issues.
