It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share the passing of our dear Brooke Torrey, who left this world on Thursday due to heart complications during the birth of her daughter, Phoenix. Brooke fought with all her strength to bring her little girl into the world. Phoenix is currently in the NICU, facing a difficult road ahead — but she carries her mother’s incredible strength within her.
Brooke lived for others — not out of obligation, but because it was simply who she was. Her kindness poured from her effortlessly, like sunlight through an open window. She made those around her feel valued, seen, and deeply loved. Though her time here was far too short, the love she gave will ripple through generations. She leaves behind a legacy of gentleness, selflessness, and unconditional love.
She adored her husband, loving him with a steady and unwavering heart. And though Phoenix will never meet her mother here on earth, she will always carry the love Brooke dreamed of giving her. We believe Brooke still watches over her, whispering love from beyond.
We would like to share words written by her husband, Austin:
There are no words to express the feeling of losing the love of your life — your soulmate — and welcoming your child on the same day. Thank you to everyone who, in one way or another, was a part of Brooke’s life. If you have fond memories or stories, please reach out to me. I want our daughter to know as much as possible about her mommy, and how truly amazing she was. Phoenix was given the gift of a mother who loved her so deeply that she sacrificed herself to bring her into this world. I pray that I can be even half the parent she was. I know you’re watching over us, baby. Brooker Bear, I love you so much, and I will until my dying breath — until we meet again, my love.
Brooke, a true angel on earth, joined Shining Stars in the spring of 2024. She was a perfect fit from the very beginning, quickly building warm relationships with both students and staff. Her golden heart, calm presence, and radiant smile made her a favorite face to see each day.
As a newlywed, Brooke was overjoyed to start a family. When she became pregnant with baby Phoenix she learned it was not going to be an easy pregnancy, and Brooke made the difficult decision to step away from work for her and her daughter’s well-being. Even so, her presence was never forgotten; she often checked in on her students and her Shining Stars family.
Brooke was so much more than a colleague and a friend — she was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and already a remarkable mother. She was the steady heartbeat in her family’s story. To her four nieces and her nephew, she was magical — the aunt who knelt to meet their eyes, listened to their smallest dreams, and wove joy into their lives with her laughter, patience, and genuine love.
Though our hearts ache in her absence, we honor Brooke by loving as she loved — with a sweet spirit, an open heart, and the grace of someone who made the world softer just by being in it.
If you are able to help out this amazing family in their time of need it would greatly be appreciated. We ask for prayers for Austin, Phoenix, and the entire family as they face a long journey of healing.
