Bronx Latin Intramural Basketball

My name is Cynthia Klebon, and I am reaching out to you on behalf of the Bronx Latin School, a Title 1 institution committed to providing quality education in the heart of the Bronx, the poorest congressional district in the United States. At Bronx Latin, we have a unique and powerful tool to encourage our students to attend school consistently – our intramural basketball program. Every morning, rain or shine, our dedicated student-athletes gather at 7 am to participate in competitive basketball, not only for the love of the sport but also as an attendance incentive. This commitment is awe-inspiring, with 35 students consistently attending, making it clear that sports play a vital role in our students' lives.

As we approach the end of the academic year, we aim to celebrate the hard work and dedication of these young individuals with an award ceremony. Unfortunately, our school lacks the necessary funding to provide the recognition they deserve. This is where your support becomes invaluable. We are seeking assistance to organize a special breakfast event for our players, along with providing them with gift cards, new racks for basketballs, shooting shirts, and awards. These items symbolize not only the celebration of their achievements but also a tangible acknowledgment of their commitment to personal and academic growth.

It's crucial to emphasize that most of our school funding is allocated to academics, leaving minimal resources for athletic programs. However, research consistently shows that involvement in high school sports correlates with increased success and confidence among students. According to The Sport Journal, students engaged in sports prior to college exhibit higher academic performance, improved self-esteem, enhanced social skills, and the ability to work as a team.

I understand this fully. As a former High School student/athlete, College player, and current player, I learned first hand the importance of teamwork, dedication, and a true commitment to the community around me. The life skills learned both on and off the court, are value tools they will carry throughout their lives.
