Broncos Kitchen

CALTRAN, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, is partnering with our sister charity, Broncos Kitchen, to raise $750,000 dollars. The funds will be used to purchase and operate a restaurant/commissary in Kalamazoo, Michigan to provide FREE dinners for food-insecure college students attending Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, and Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

Broncos Kitchen began serving free dinners to college students on a regular basis on June 8, 2020, at our 58 West Student Apartments meal site. Currently, we are located at the Wesley Foundation near Western Michigan University's campus.  Free dinners are served on Mondays and Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m.  Although the program is designed for food-insecure college students, any student may participate if they have a valid ID.

Broncos Kitchen's long-term goal is to raise $750,000 million to build and operate a commissary/restaurant.  Proceeds from the restaurant will be used to underwrite our free dinner program for Kalamazoo area college students.

In addition to our new commissary, a small fleet of food trucks will be purchased and deployed near student housing complexes to provide free meals for those in need.  Many of our dinner guests do not own vehicles. Therefore, it is incumbent upon Broncos Kitchen to serve our free meals where they live. This student-led operation is designed to function as a peer-to-peer hunger-relief initiative.

FACTOID:
44 percent of students cut the size of their meals or skipped meals because there wasn't enough money for food.
15 percent of students lost weight because there wasn't enough money for food.
20 percent of students did not eat for a whole day because there wasn't enough money for food.
