On Monday 15th January Egg lost the use of his back legs. There followed days of sedation, pain management, X-rays, manipulated toileting, and the most excruciating anguish I have ever experienced. But this isn’t about me, it's always been about him, from the moment we met until the time comes to sever our agglutinate bond, he’s it. Egg-bound forever. So, here’s the biological bit: Egg’s cruciate ligaments (the fibrous tissue that holds the femur and tibia in place) have ruptured, so his thigh and shin bones are no longer working in unison to propel him forwards. He literally has nowhere to go without surgery. Turns out the insurers will only cover the cost of half of one leg, which is neither financially ideal nor particularly practical (the small print really does suck). I’d give him my two legs if I could, but the consultant says we should concentrate on fixing his own sticks before embarking on groundbreaking experimental surgery. His first operation (on the left/lamest leg) was completed today (22nd Jan), and I’m pleased to say he’s made it through to the recovery crate. If everything goes to plan, he’ll have his second surgery in April, followed by physio and hydrotherapy to help him walk again. It's a 6–9-month road to recovery. And it's incredibly expensive. God knows times are tough at the moment, particularly for the self-employed, particularly in January, but anyone who knows (and invariably loves) him will understand my dogged determination to fix Egg’s broken back legs and give him the quality of life he so evidently deserves but hasn’t always had. Any contributions toward his recovery fund will increase his chances and ensure the best care possible whilst he’s in rehabilitation.
