Broken Boards is a coming of age short film releasing later this year!

About the film

Broken Boards follows a group of skateboarders, who’s lives get shaken up after their friend Luke sadly takes his life. The rest of the group deals with this loss in different ways and it ultimately tears the group apart.

Director's Note from Jonny Lodge

“Skateboarding has been a massive part of my life. I got my first skateboard a decade ago and heavily got into it over lockdown in 2020. This sport has introduced me to so many amazing people (and a few broken bones along the way), so it only felt right for me to write my first short film script about it. ‘Broken Boards’ takes inspiration from all parts of my life with the themes of grief, mental health and obviously skateboarding culture.

I wrote this film to be set in the early 2000s. It depicts a simpler time, before phones were widespread and friendships were all in real life. Furthermore, the visual aesthetic of this time appeals to me, from the clothing styles of baggy jeans and oversized shirts, alongside the gritty look of camcorders and home video from the time.

I personally find that men’s mental health isn’t spoken about enough and is often ignored. Suicide is the leading cause of death in the UK for men under 50 and on average 1 in 8 men suffer with mental health probelms. I hope that ‘Broken Boards’ can help make conversations about this topic and even it it just helps one person I’m happy with that”
