Back on July 14th 2019, I suffered a spiral fracture to my tibia and fibula which required surgery the following day.
The injury required a rod being pounded inside of my tibia from my knee to my ankle with several pins to hold it in place as well as a plate and pins on my fibula to straighten and hold in place. I was required to spend 5 days in the hospital as a result. Luckily my work was very good to me and besides the week of vacation I took while in the hospital, I was able to work from home during the healing process before being able to commute to the office on a daily basis.
Over the next couple months of first weekly and the bi-weekly Dr. appointments my leg seemed to be healing well and I was on pace for a full and speedy recovery. Unfortunately my recovery took a dangerous turn almost 2 months to the day after the original injury.
On Sept 13 about half way through a normal day in the office I was taken first to urgent care and then to the emergency room with very intense, direct and ever increasing pain to my right lower leg. What started that day around 1 pm as small shape shots of pain had turned into crippling, uncontrollable pain so bad I can’t believe the human body is able to experience it without shutting down and passing out. The Dr. did what I believe is everything possible (short of a nerve block) to make me comfortable during my time in the emergency to no avail. Nothing seemed to even remotely dull the ever increasing level of pain until approximately midnight/1am when they were finally able to get me comfortable and I was able to sleep.
Apparently some of the hardware installed in leg leg had become infected and was the reason for my unexpected and uncontrollable pain. As a result of this infection I would undergo 5 additional surgeries over the following two weeks to remove all the installed hardware as well as some infected bone and tissue. My most recent surgery was a skin flap plastic surgery to cover the area of my leg that has been removed. This was done by taking a large section of skin, fat and some muscle from my upper thigh and using it to cover the needed area on my lower leg. As a result of the skin flap surgery I am required to keep my leg elevated at all times for the next 6-12 weeks in basic bed rest.
Unfortunately I don’t have any short time disability insurance and I have used all of my remaining vacation time through work as well as the 40 hours I was able to borrow against what I would acrew by the end of the year. So starting Monday, 9-30-2019, I don’t have any source of income to help cover the mortgage, vehicle payments, utilities and most importantly insurance payments.
I’m hopefully through the goodness of your hearts you might be able to help me in this time of need as I push hard to get back to work as soon as possible. Anything helps.
From the the bottom of my heart I thank you!
