Brogan's Skeleton Fundraiser

HEY EVERYONE!

I'm Brogan, a 26-year old skeleton athlete currently competing for Great Britain on the World Cup Team. I have just finished my sixth competitive season, where I ended on a high after smashing my World Cup Personal Best finish - 5th place in only my 6th ever World Cup start- you can have a read here ➡️ Crowley smashes World Cup Personal Best with fine fifth.

I was also selected for my first ever World Championships at the end of this competitive season, so I was able to experience my first ever 4 heat race... as per the Olympic Games format, as opposed to the standard 2 heat race. Yes... by the way... the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games are now less than a year away!!

Skeleton, as you may or may not know, is a downhill sliding sport which involves a single person lying head first on a sled, plummeting down an ice track! The aim of the sport is to get to the bottom of the track in the quickest time possible (over a number of runs - either 2 or 4), which means hitting speeds of up to 90mph with your chin centimetres from (or sometimes on) the ice. Great Britain's skeleton athletes have medalled at EVERY Olympic games the sport has featured in - we managed to claim 50% of the medals at the last Olympic Games in PyeongChang in 2018! I aim to follow on from the likes of Shelly Rudman, Amy Williams, Lizzy Yarnold, Laura Deas and Dom Parsons and represent Team GB at the next Winter Olympic Games -  Beijing 2022.

For the past 6 years, I have been training for skeleton. Prior to skeleton, I was a heptathlete, specialising in 100m hurdles (I still hold the record for English Schools senior women's 100m hurdles in combined events) and I represented Great Britain at Junior Level. I came across skeleton through a Talent ID search named Power2Podium, shortly after the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, and became 1 of 8 successful applicants from the thousands that originally applied. Since then, there has been no looking back!

Unfortunately, the last couple of years haven't been plain sailing for me. Since winning the overall Europa Cup Title in 2017/18 and being awarded 'Breakthrough athlete of the year', I have had a pretty horrific time with injuries and have spent a lot of time in operating theatres (8 surgeries at the age of 25 is quite a stat!). My most recent surgery was a nerve graft repair and reconstruction in January 2020 after the discovery that I had ruptured a nerve (meaning I couldn't feel my foot), severed an artery and had a hole in my ankle. This happened after complications from a previous surgery and the lack of feeling and feedback from my foot means that I have had further complications and injuries - a fully ruptured plantar fascia and fractured metatarsals in my foot. These are ongoing and long-term injuries which are being managed by the wonderful team of coaches and staff around me at British Skeleton, but it's been an incredibly challenging few years, to say the least.

This year as I said, has been a huge step forwards in my development as an athlete - mainly because of the amount of runs I have managed to complete. I've already managed triple the amount of runs that I completed last season, which was one of my big goals for the year - simply to spend time on ice and on the sled. I'm excited by what is to come, heading into the next 12 months and into the Olympic year, and it's encouraging to know that my pushing is in a great place, despite having to manage my training load, due to my ongoing nerve injury.

I have been lucky enough to have a huge amount of support in the past with my crowdfunding campaigns, so I am back again as people have shown a lot of interest and and have asked how they can help to support me, which I am hugely and eternally grateful for!

At this point in my sliding career, equipment has a huge input and plays a massive part in furthering my progress and development as a skeleton athlete. Just as an idea for some of the costs... a new helmet costs approximately £300 each and a visor for the helmets cost around £40 each (you can have various different colours of visors which are appropriate for different weather conditions when sliding). We have to contribute a certain amount to the programme for the equipment that we loan, and this cost is around £2000 per year and includes the use of suits, brush spikes and runners. Runners play a major part in sliding as they are the crucial link between the sled and the ice. The intricate design and cut of the runners mean that they are costly to make and buy, and are crucial for  competing with the world's best, and in various different ice conditions - warm and cold ice (yes, that is a thing!).

The support I have received from everyone thus far has allowed me to commit to skeleton, and has given me the financial assistance I desperately need for equipment and  running costs of my summer training in Bath (where the skeleton programme is based). Without that support, I would not have had the success I have had so far - thank you to each and every one of you who has helped me along the way!

I hope that I can continue to make you all proud. Every like, every comment, every share of my page and every donation means a lot to me, so THANK YOU again from the bottom of my heart to each and every one of you for your generous support!
