Help Brody achieve his wish for new Power Assist Wheels for his wheelchair to promote independence and inclusion and limit strain to his muscles and joints ahead of Secondary School.
Brody is an 11-year-old boy from Whitland. Born prematurely at 29 weeks, 5 days, Brody was diagnosed at 15 months with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, which affects the entire body. Cerebral Palsy describes a lifelong disability caused by damage to parts of the brain.
Brody is unable to walk without assistance, so his wheelchair is his way of getting around independently.
As Brody transitions to mainstream secondary school in September, he has many challenges ahead of him.
He no longer has just 1 classroom where he is based, he will now be moving around a much larger site than he is used to, and just like his peers, Brody wants to be as independent as possible and embrace this next chapter of his educational journey. Unfortunately, the NHS provides either an active wheelchair or an electric chair, which Brody has always had. Brody made a choice himself that he really wanted to keep his active wheelchair as he is keen to keep his fitness up and keep working on his upper body strength to aid him with his transfers and his daily tasks and promote his independence. However, using this chair for longer distances will exasperate his fatigue and put extra strain on his muscles.
The E Motion Power assist wheels give him the freedom and independence to support him in school and on family days out. The wheels will protect his muscles and joints from overwork whilst allowing him to keep active but not overtired, so he is able to get to his classes more quickly and not be so fatigued when he is there, giving him the opportunity to achieve academic success.
After trialling these wheels recently, the smile on Brody’s face as he wheeled himself up a hill on the farm was just amazing. Ramps, hills, longer distances, and different surfaces like grass will be so much more accessible with these wheels. These are the perfect solution to support him in this next stage of his life. Sadly, they cost around £6000, so this is where we need your help.
As friends of Brody’s family, we hope to help raise funds to buy these wheels for him, to help him gain the independence he craves as he approaches his teenage years.
We hope to organise several fundraising events over the summer to try and get these wheels for Brody before he starts school in September and has set up this page to help us with our fundraising efforts.
Thank you for your support, which is so very much appreciated by Brody and his family.
