Help Brody, the Cleft Palate Puppy, Get the Care He Needs!

Meet Brody (formerly Squidward), a resilient little bulldog puppy who has already overcome so much in his short life. Brody was born with a cleft palate and surrendered to Freedom Ride Rescue in Raleigh, NC. He was then fostered by Julie Pellicore, one of the most experienced cleft palate puppy fosters I know, before finding his forever home with the Byers just a few weeks ago.

While Alex and Liv Byers knew Brody would need special care, they weren’t expecting such a massive medical emergency so quickly. As Brody grew, his cleft widened, creating a pocket where food could fall into his trachea, leading to aspiration pneumonia. He was rushed to the NC State Veterinary Hospital (Emergency Services and Critical Care Unit) for emergency treatment, where he has undergone extensive care, including consultations with Nutrition Services to formulate a custom G-tube feeding recipe using prescription food, which is also very expensive. Additionally, Brody had a consultation with NC State’s Dentistry Service to determine the best course of action for repairing his cleft palate once he’s old enough for surgery.

Brody now requires a G-tube for feeding and will remain on it for several more months until he is ready for surgery. The Byers are doing everything they can to give Brody the best life possible, but the medical bills have already climbed past $6,000 for the emergency visit and overnight stays, and will creep over $15,000 by the end of Brody's cleft repair journey, far more than they ever anticipated.
