Brodie McCarthy Scholarship Fund

Donation protected
Brodie McCarthy lived his short 18 years of life to the fullest. He was the kid everybody liked. Kind, fun, generous of spirit, smart, empathetic, athletic. A friend to all, with an easy and radiant smile and positive attitude.
On May 11 he was doing what he loved as a member of the Montague Regional High School AAA rugby team. During a tournament in Summerside he was tackled and struck his head. It was an ordinary rugby play. He walked to the sideline and sat down. Everyone thought he was OK. He wasn’t. Brodie suffered a brain hemorrhage, was transported to hospital in Summerside and later Moncton for surgery.
Tragically the surgery was unsuccessful.
In a moment of unfathomable sorrow, Brodie’s family knew the path he would want them to take. Brodie would be kept on life-support enabling his organs to be donated. As of this writing, it is known his liver and kidneys were donated to recipients in Halifax, his heart to Montreal and his lungs to Toronto.
In death Brodie McCarthy has given the gift of life.
Next month Brodie would have walked across a stage to receive his high school diploma. He was already looking forward to the next stage of life, having been accepted into the Holland College Sport and Leisure program; his long term goal to become a physiotherapist.
His death has left a gapping hole in our eastern PEI community, not only for his family but the wide network of friends who were blessed by his loyalty, support, friendship and quiet leadership. It has hit close to home with our family. My daughter has known Brodie and his twin brother Justin for for years. She dates Brodie’s best friend.
With the support of Brodie’s family, we want to recognize the goodness he brought to life and the immense gift he has given in death with a named scholarship fund at Montague Regional.
Brodie was always quick to help others. Now is our opportunity to say a small thank you to him for the life long lessons he has given to all of us.
All funds will be turned over to the Public School Branch, which will provide financial administration and oversight. MRHS will dictate criteria and identify scholarship recipients. I will withdraw the funds raised and get them to MRHS outside of GoFundMe.
Our scholarship will not bring Brodie back, nor will it ease the loss the McCarthy family, MRHS or the broader community is feeling. But it will help future students reach their goals. And it will help us honour in a substantive way a young man who has left an enduring mark on our community and province.
