I Am Legally Blind and Need Your Help
Hi. I'm Debbie Tester. I was born with a condition called Degenerative Myopia. What this means is I have a severe case of nearsightedness that causes damage to my retina. The back of the eye keeps growing which in turn stretches out the tissues in my eye and causes tearing and in my case retinal detachment, hemorrhages, loss of peripheral vision. When the tissue stretches and ribs I lose vision in that portion of the tissue. What this means is that I have spots of missing vision throughout whatever site I still have.
I did not become legally blind all at once. It has been a slow process through my life. Every few years it would get a little worse. In 1983 the retina in my right eye detached. In 2015 the commission for the blind of New Jersey declared me legally blind.
I have adaptive equipment that helps me in my life. One of my favorites is my CCTV. It allows me to read things that I couldn't with my bare eyes. It magnifies and will also change the color in the foreground and background of the lettering which did. After all these years my CCTV has been going on the fritz. Is very expensive equipment ($4,640) but I know I cannot live a productive life without it. That is why I decided to open a GoFundMe. The CCTV I am looking forward to purchasing is the same brand I have now but has one extra feature that mine doesn't. OCR, Optical Character Recognition, which means this CCTV has text to speech and can read to me when my eyes are too tired. Being low vision is very fatiguing.
It was a hard decision whether to do this or not. It is somewhat embarrassing but I am glad I did. So far, I have raised $2,8 38. I onlyly need $1,802 more.
