I hate typing this for many reasons. As some may know, our 4 year old doggo Brixton is having severe neurological problems that no one seems to be able to solve. About 4am Sunday morning (the 5th) I was up checking on our son Myles and didn’t see Brixton on his dog bed. I checked the living room to find him curled in a ball, scared, surrounded by numerous piles of vomit. When he wouldn’t come to me I immediately woke Mark up. We checked our home security cameras and saw that Brixton had been throwing up continuously since 9:50pm the night before (the 4th). He had thrown up about twice every hour from 10pm to 4:30am. We took him outside and he went potty, walked normal, even played with our water hose to make sure he had energy. We called every vet we could but almost no where was open so early. We put him in our room to sleep for the night and planned to take him first thing in the morning.
Unfortunately by morning time, Brixton could hardly move. His mouth was hung open and his face looked sunken in. He couldn’t walk without wobbling and falling, he tripped down the only two steps in our home, and he refused to eat. He had also thrown up a few times more. Mark rushed him to an emergency vet and I followed in my own car with the baby. They did blood work, checked for poisons and toxins, an x-ray of his stomach, gave medications and fluids, and still nothing. In fact, Brixton could no longer hold himself up. We then transferred him to another hospital to be monitored, they too couldn’t figure out what to do. We got a call about 9pm last night (the 5th) that Brixton wasn’t getting any better. The doctor recommended it was time to take him to a neurologist. Brixton was not progressing and something was really wrong. We transferred him again up to San Marcos to Veterinary Specialty Hospital at 11pm last night where they ran more blood work, another X-ray, special therapy, and head trauma medications for brain bleeds and fluid leaks, nothing is working. Our next step was to start with MRI with an actual neurologist to see what sort of brain and or nerve damage Brixton is dealing with now.
He is only 4. He has always been an extremely resilient pup but this is much bigger than him now. After back tracing-we saw that he hit his head/spine fairly hard in our backyard on a BBQ about an hour before the vomiting started which makes us think this needs attention sooner than later. It was already too late to pump his stomach for toxins and whatever is doing damage is already full fledged. Brixton is a part of our family. Mark had got him right before I met them and right after his motorcycle accident. He is our first fuzzy boy and protector of our family. Lola (our bulldog) doesn’t want to eat without him. Myles (our son) is wondering where that big tail is to pull on. He is our family and we want him home.
We’ve spent approx $3500 since Sunday morning but we are running out of immediate money to use and are looking at a possible $4,500 MRI bill within the next 24 hours at the fourth Emergency Veterinary hospital we’ve been too. With the possibility of more treatment or surgery if needed. There are things we can and will do to make sure his treatments are paid. We are looking into selling our boat and/or anything else around the house that we can but it's not an instant income. With Covid I am still out of a job and Mark is our only source of solid income.
We are anticipating the high end of the MRI estimate with possibly surgery/further treatment if needed. We also took into consideration the 2.9% GoFundMe takes from the transaction. Any money that is left over will be dispersed to local shelters, research, rescues, homeless dogs, animal hospitals, etc.
Please do not donate if you are not in a position too, we also will accept sweet words and lots of hugs. Thank you so much to everyone who reads this and helps us bring Brixton home.
