Hi all! This is Britta speaking, but you may know me better as Existential Crisis Cakes. I’m a disabled, queer cake artist based in Toledo, Ohio. I’ve recently found out that my landlord is selling the house I’ve lived in for four years - the place where I built my cake business.
As a small businesswoman, I operate on a shoestring budget. I’ve been scraping by and haven’t had the time or money to save up for moving.
I have been running specials and selling off personal items to help, but the fact is that moving is very expensive for someone like me. I work out of my home kitchen, so the packing and moving process directly impacts my ability to make money. As a disabled woman with an energy-limiting condition, I have to factor in additional time to recover from the exertion of this process that able-bodied people do not have to consider. I need help to stabilize both my life and livelihood during and after this move.
I’m asking for $3,000 to fund my relocation. Any money raised above that goal will be used to fund appliances to help expand my business/make things easier on my disabled body or additional time off to recover physically. I know times are hard for everyone right now, and there are many worthy causes, so I hesitate to ask for any help at all. I appreciate any financial assistance you're able to spare.
Here’s an estimate of how I will use the funds, in order of priority -
Security deposit + fees + up front rent costs: $1800-$2700 (depending on which property approves me/how large of a deposit they require)
Recoup one lost weekend (or week) of work: $1000-$1500
Movers: $400
Appliances (ex: air conditioner, dishwasher, additional freezer and/or fridge): $500-$1000
I’ve been making cake art to help us all cope with (and laugh at!) all kinds of crisis moments through the last few years. Thank you for helping me through this crisis of my own ❤️
