A little over three months ago, March 20th, 2016, my brother and sister-in-law (Tillman and Brittany Milstead) were married and about to embark on their lives together. They had a storybook wedding and a love for each other that words cannot begin to describe. They returned from their honeymoon in Mexico joyfully anticipating the beginning of a wonderful life together. They were excited about all the adventures ahead of them as a married couple. Little did they know they were about to receive the horrific news that would change their lives forever…
In 2012, Brittany was diagnosed with Grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma, a form of malignant brain cancer. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor and her doctors were able to remove the majority of it. Unfortunately, they were unable to remove all of the cells due to the tentacle-like projections that invade the surrounding brain tissue. Brittany then went through chemotherapy and radiation to try to eradicate the remaining cancer cells. Due to the nature of her cancer they were never able to completely destroy the few cancer cells that were left. However, she overcame the surgery and went back to school, determined to become a nurse that would be able to help others who battle similar conditions. Brittany followed up with routine visits with her team of doctors, MRI’s, blood work, etc. throughout the years. She continued to live her life and function normally while the cancer remained under control.
At this point, Tillman and Brittany met and began dating in August 2014. From their very first date Brittany was completely transparent about what she had been through and dealt with the prior years. There was an immediate connection between them that developed into a deep love and friendship that continued to grow and they became engaged in July 2015. Aware of possible risks associated with Brittany’s history, they faced the future full of hope with the commitment to love each other in sickness and in health. Their faith and commitment to God and their marriage vows would enable them to face whatever the future had in store for them.
About a month and a half into their marriage Brittany had a routine MRI that detected a massive brain tumor. Her team of doctors chose to quickly perform surgery to remove the tumor and determine what type and what grade it was. When the pathology report came in we were all devastated to learn that she had developed Grade IV Glioblastoma, the most malignant, infiltrative and most aggressive form of brain cancer. Ever since her surgery Brittany has been completely bedridden with loss of mobility and speech. The doctors have now given Brittany a very grim prognosis. Tillman and her parents have been diligent in their care for her and Tillman has taken time off of work to be by her side 24/7.
The persistent prayers and support by our wonderful family and friends have overwhelmed and sustained us through this unbelievably difficult and painful journey. Needless to say there is great financial need due to exorbitant medical costs and daily living needs. All of this, as well as accruing bills and obligations, contribute to extreme stress to say the least. No contribution is too small and would be deeply appreciated. We would be extremely thankful if you would share this information with as many people as possible.
With sincere love and gratitude,
Jennifer
