Brittany Hinsey's Medical Expenses

Hello everyone,
Brittany has been my neighbor and a great friend for over 20 years. She was born with Turner Syndrome, which is a chromosomal disorder in which a female is born with only one X chromosome. This can lead to things such as: heart issues, infertility, and more. Here's her story as told by the Turner Syndrome Society:

"On Saturday, December 19, 2020, 22-year-old Brittany woke up, showered, brushed her teeth, and then felt what she described as “a surge of pain that just instantly took over my body.” By 5:00 PM that evening, she was undergoing emergency open heart surgery to repair an aortic dissection.
Brittany has Turner syndrome, and although she has been in the care of a cardiologist since her diagnosis, she has had high blood pressure for a long time that was never fully managed and controlled. She took medication, but it didn’t seem to be enough or the right combination because her blood pressure was always high – very often in the 170-180 range. Brittany says she was not as diligent as she could have been with follow ups and by regularly monitoring her blood pressure at home. She has a bicuspid aortic valve and says, “I definitely knew I was at risk with my high blood pressure.”
Brittany is a college student and had returned home from school for the holiday’s to be with her parent’s and family. She believes she would not be with us today if her parents had not immediately called 911.

"I am 22 years old and this all happened on Saturday, December 19th. First off, I have been seeing a cardiologist ever since I got diagnosed with Turner syndrome (TS). I do have a bicuspid aortic valve which is common in most girls with TS. I have had multiple echocardiograms over the years, and my cardiologist would closely monitor my heart. I have had very high blood pressure which is something my doctor and I are trying to work with now to make sure no more incidences occur. We are experimenting with different medications and I feel that blood pressure should closely be monitored in those with Turner syndrome because our aortas tend to become dilated.
On Friday afternoon the 18th, I was beginning to feel some pains in my upper neck and chest area. I had just gone to the chiropractor that morning. I thought it was pains from the adjustment and I took some pain relief medicine and went to sleep, still aggravated by the pain. When I woke up on Saturday the 19th, I was planning on going back to the chiropractor to see if they could provide any treatment to help with the pains. It had been a while since I had an adjustment, so I thought Friday’s adjustment was what caused the pain.
After I showered, I was brushing my teeth and then a SURGE of pain just instantly took over my body. My whole chest and back was in excruciating pain. It was so instant that I knew the moment the aorta tore. Luckily, my parents were home with me because I am currently home from college on Winter break. I attend Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.
Anyways, my parents called 911 and I was rushed in an ambulance to Broward Health Coral Springs Hospital where they discovered the aortic dissection. They came rushing into my room and explained that I had to be transported to Broward General in Fort Lauderdale for emergency open heart surgery. They called the surgeon and his team, and they were ready to take me into the operating room as as soon as I arrived.
At around 5:00 PM on Saturday the 19th, they began the surgery which lasted 5 hours. It was luckily successful, and I was in the ICU for 3 days and then put in a regular room until I was discharged on Christmas Eve. I was very fortunate to have been able to spend Christmas with my family."

Brittany's family has to pay $80,000 out of pocket for her life saving heart surgery. She is a beautiful soul that could make anyone's day better and would do anything for the people she loves. There will be a feature on her story on South Florida's Local 10 News on Tuesday, February 23rd at 5:45 PM if you would like to tune in and hear Brittany's story from her point of view.
