My elderly parents, Glenn and Iris Knight, are currently residing in an old farmhouse in northern Missouri. As of recently, both have been struggling greatly with their health and mobility. Their home is a forty minute drive from the nearest hospital and over 1,000 miles from the nearest family member. With both parents aging so quickly it has become imperative that we move them closer to family and medical care immediately, especially with a harsh Missouri Winter not far off.
My 78 year old mother, Iris, suffered a fall a few years ago breaking her pelvis and hip. A couple months ago she fell again, and even after surgery she is not healing properly. My 81 year old father, Glenn, has been losing his sight, hearing, and much more general health at a rapid pace. Both of my parents have done an incredible job taking care of one another, it's time for them to come home where we can help.
Two of my brothers (Jeff and Jason) and me (Erin) will be driving a car out to pack and move our parents across the country. The process of moving is expected to take about two weeks. A truck will need to be rented to move some of our parent's more necessary possessions, but they understand that we will not be able to take everything. Jason has exhausted his resources to build a space for our parents so that they can share a home with him and his family. Unfortunately, we have not been able to gather enough funds to move them on such short notice. We are reaching out for support from our extended family, friends, churches, and communities.
Glenn and Iris are two of the kindest, strongest, most resilient people I have ever known. They have always been a compassionate and positive presence in the communities they've lived in. They are active in church groups, cub scouts, genealogy work, etc. Even now my mother is still trying to maintain her garden and share their produce with their community. They have also raised 13 children and helped raise many of their grandchildren over the years.
I am their 11th child, Erin Knight. I was adopted by Glenn and Iris when I was 8 years old. When they were faced with the decision to take in my siblings and myself, they did not have the money, did not have the space, and I was so sick that I was not expected to live. Not only was I sick, I was a feral and dreadfully impossible child. Against all odds, Glenn and Iris managed not only to keep me alive, but to raise all of us with their strength and resolve. They were able to turn that impossible situation into an absolute miracle.
Moving our parents across the country on such short notice seems equally as impossible. We are going to make it work however we have to, despite the challenges of cost and time, because sometimes life just doesn't leave much room for doubt. We want our parents to spend their remaining years with our family. I want my daughter to be able to know the people who raised her mother.
Glenn and Iris have a very physically and emotionally challenging adventure ahead of them. Please consider contributing to support their journey, to give them that precious gift of time spent with family, as well as access to the medical care that they need. All funds raised will go directly to Glen and Iris Knight in support of this move, enabling us to bring them home. Any donations beyond what is needed for moving costs will be put towards Glen and Iris's medical expenses. It is never easy to ask for help but my spunky and stubborn parents have finally agreed to let me put this request out into the world.
