BRINGING BROOKLYN HOME

My dog Brooklyn and I went everywhere together. He was with me at every hour of every day. People would always say when they thought of us, it was never one without the other. Never just Brooklyn, or never just Kelsie. Always Brooklyn & Kelsie, or Kelsie & Brooklyn. He loved to run beside me on my BMX, howling at the fire trucks going by, and was absolutely crazy about swimming! Eventually I got him registered as my Emotional Support Dog through my Medical Clinic. Brooklyn and I have been through SO MUCH together. Both good and bad. Shortly after his birthday in 2021, he was stolen. I was absolutely devastated. I really shut down, and closed myself off from people after that. It took me a very long time to get back to being myself for the most part... Though there's still a very large part of me that is missing. He was, and is, my other half!
After his disappearance I started my search for him, and never gave up. I put up missing poster's multiple times (although ALL the poster's were repeatedly torn down within less than 24HRS, every single time I put them up), reported him missing to all the animal agencies I could find (such as SPCA, Animal Control, and other agencies SPCA also suggested) and checked in with them sporadically to see if they had any updates or had found him, circulated and shared missing post's complete with many pictures across social media (with the original missing post I made for him being shared 87 some times, as well as another one of the post's being shared close to 500 times, and many more in between), as well as paid to have him featured as the #1 missing pet on missing pet websites, filed a police report and updated it later on with new found information and evidence to prove he had been stolen, etc... all this to no avail. He was a VERY well known and loved character in downtown Vancouver, yet nobody had ever seen or heard of him again.
On December 30th, 2023 by some absolute miracle, Brooklyn and I found eachother! However, the woman who currently has him, along with the rescue she adopted him from called PB & Chi, have been less than willing to work with me. After speaking with police, they advised me to take this to court to get him back via Civil Litigation.
After speaking with a few lawyers and gathering legal advice, I was assured I have a very strong case. I have since gone through with the court process, but ended up having a law school assist me with my case. Unfortunately the defendants continued to get the case adjourned, and then applied for the entire case to be dismissed. What was incredibly frustrating for me, was on the same day as my case was to be heard, they had also booked the defendants Application To Dismiss to be heard. The judge chose to hear the defendants Application To Dismiss before my case, and decided to approve their dismissal before hearing my case. Thankfully, I've since learned that since the judge dismissed my action on the basis of failure to show conversion, despite the fact my original notice of claim was filed in detinue, I can appeal the decision of the court.
I am making this Go-Fund-Me to help with costs of retaining a lawyer to assist in the appeal, as well as to represent me for the rest of the case.
Thank-You so much for all the love and support everybody has been showing us! It has been such a huge motivation to have so many people sharing our story, reaching out to me with support and/or to share their own experiences, recognizing and coming up to me on the street to tell me they have been closely following our case, etc... These last 3 years without Brooklyn, and now this entire process with the court, essentially figuring out everything on my own, has been anything but easy. It has been beyond stressful and incredibly draining both mentally, emotionally and physically. However, I am certain that once this lengthy process is complete, we WILL bring Brooklyn home once again! I will NOT give up!
