Sonographer for Kenya
Donation protected
Julie Purko was born and raised in a small village in Kenya. She is the youngest of 14 children. Her mother both modeled and taught of her faith in God, leading her children to trust in Him. She worked tirelessly to ensure that each of her 11 daughters would be educated, which was unprecedented for most families in Kenya.
Julie continued her education to become a registered nurse and worked in a hospital in Nairobi for 10 years. Her work and exposure in the Cardiac Unit grew her interest in becoming a medical sonographer (ultrasound technician) as she was aware of the need in Kenya beyond Nairobi.
In August 2016, after much prayer, a plan began to unfold for Julie to come to the US to enroll in the Ultrasound Technichian program at Spokane Community College. Her funding included her own savings, selling her car and other possessions, and a sponsorship from a family friend in Kenya.
Julie arrived in Spokane WA on Christmas Day 2016, and enrolled in the 2017 winter quarter at SCC. She is now in her final year, with just two quarters to complete for graduation.
The tuition for international students attending SCC is nearly three times that of residents, an average of $4,500 per quarter. She has worked hard to provide for herself since arriving in the US, cleaning homes, while employed as an RA at a small international boarding school, and more recently added working weekends as an in-home caregiver.
Last year, Julie’s Sponsor lost his business due to political unrest in Kenya, thus cutting any additional aide for education. Julie's church family and friends have generously assisted as well, however the remaining tuition need is greater than what she has been able to earn and raise on her own.
The urgency for funds is due to the program requirement of completing the degree within 7 consecutive quarters. Financial aide is unavailable, regardless of her excellence in academics.
We are asking each of you to please consider donating to this fund, allowing Julie to complete her certification. Her desire is to be trained and well equipped to work as a professional Sonographer in Kenya, as well as to continue her work to assist underprivileged children in their pursuit of education.
Thank you!
