In the days following October 7, like millions of Jews around the world, I was searching for clarity.

As someone who deeply values both Torah learning and those who dedicate their lives to it, I found myself asking a question that has become one of the defining issues of our generation:

Does a life devoted to Torah exempt a person from the obligation to defend the Jewish people?

What began as my first blog post became a small booklet. That booklet has now grown into a sefer: Torah and the Army.

This sefer was written out of a conviction that the answer to this question cannot be determined by slogans, politics, or social pressure. It must emerge from the Torah itself.

Looking through many sources - from Tanach, Chazal, the Rambam, Ramban, Rishonim, Acharonim, and contemporary Poskim - I examine the Torah's approach to מלחמת מצוה, communal responsibility, Torah study, and military service.

The conclusion that emerges is quite challenging: the immense value of לימוד התורה does not, in itself, negate the obligation to fight when the Jewish people are under attack. Throughout our history, Torah scholars have shouldered the responsibility of physically defending כלל ישראל alongside their dedication to Torah.

This is not a book against Torah learning. On the contrary, it is written with the conviction that Torah is the foundation of the Jewish people. But love of Torah also demands intellectual honesty and the courage to confront difficult questions through the lens of our mesorah.

Much time for research, writing, and careful study have gone into this project.
