I am Leander Franke. I never thought I would start a GoFundMe, as I have always made films without a team or on a shoestring budget. However this film, the culmination of so much research, thought and dreams is something that might need some extra help to become a reality. I want to fairly reimburse the members of my film team as properly as I can.

About the film: This film emerged from the desire to create a film about queer voices and queer,trans history, from where my roots are, Berlin and the GDR. This film will be my master’s thesis at the New School and will be shown as part of its thesis show in the winter of 2026. It will also

be shown and made in collaboration with Millennium Film Workshop.

This film will tell the often overlooked story of transgender and queer lives during the GDR in Berlin, as well as the mutual need for queer resistance and joy in the current moment . It is also important to me for other topics like queer representation, archival research, and history.

The plot goes like this: Friedrich and Alex are two young transgender queer rebels caught between the issues of the outside world and the queer community, and the magical space they find in it. For them to find their place in the world, they even travel through time and space. This

is a modern-day fable and 21st-century Bildungsroman of Berlin punks and artists in the 1980s GDR, clashing and bonding with modern-day queer youth.This film will have moments of respite and relaxation for happy queer people and moments of fight, challenge, and resistance. These two elements are equally necessary for queer liberation.

This film is supposed to be both a respite and a call to fight and keep resisting.

Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass ich einmal eine GoFundMe-Kampagne starten würde, da ich meine Filme bisher immer ohne großes Team oder mit einem sehr kleinen Budget realisiert habe. Doch dieser Film welches das Ergebnis so vieler Recherchen, Gedanken und Träume ist etwas, dass zusätzliche Unterstützung braucht, um Wirklichkeit zu werden. Außerdem möchte ich die Mitglieder meines Filmteams so fair wie möglich bezahlen, und das ist nicht möglich, ohne euch, meine Community, um Hilfe zu bitten.

Über den Film:
Dieser Film ‘Die Legende von Alex and Friedrich’ entstand aus dem Wunsch heraus, einen Film über Queere Stimmen und Transgender Geschichte zu machen von meinen eigenen Wurzeln in Berlin und in der DDR. Der Film wird meine Masterarbeit an der New School sein und im Winter 2026 im Rahmen der Abschlussausstellung gezeigt werden. Er entsteht zudem in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Millennium Film Workshop und wird dort ebenfalls gezeigt.

Der Film erzählt die oft übersehene Geschichte von Trans und queeren Leben in der DDR in Berlin sowie von der Notwendigkeit von queeren Kampf und queerer Freude Heutzutage. Darüber hinaus ist er mir wichtig im Hinblick auf Themen wie Queere Repräsentation, Archivarbeit und Geschichtsschreibung.

Die Handlung:
Friedrich und Alex sind zwei junge trans queere Rebellen, gefangen zwischen den Herausforderungen der Außenwelt und ihrer Community. Um ihren Platz in der Welt zu finden, reisen sie sogar durch Zeit und Raum. Es ist eine modernes Märchen und ein Bildungsroman des 21. Jahrhunderts über Berliner Punks und Künstler*innen in der DDR der 1980er Jahre, die mit queerer Jugend von heute aufeinandertreffen.

Dieser Film wird Momente der Ruhe und des Aufatmens enthalten, ebenso wie Momente des Kampfes, der Herausforderung und des Widerstands. Beide ist gleichermaßen notwendig für queere Befreiung. Der Film soll sowohl ein Zufluchtsort als auch ein Aufruf dazu sein, weiterzukämpfen und nicht nachzulassen.
