Help Pete Hires Come Home with Dignity, Care, and Comfort
Hi everyone,
I’m writing this on behalf of someone very special to our family — my father, Pete Hires, a lifelong Georgian, husband, father, and grandfather who has always faced life with quiet strength and grit.
For those that know our family, you know he has struggled for many years. Pete was paralyzed from the waist down due to complications from a lower back spinal surgery over 20 years ago. He was able to regain function of one leg, while the other remained paralyzed from the knee down. Additional spinal issues left him unable to work for many years. My father's upcoming needs will require my mother to leave the workforce as well.
The last thing my mother and father want is a handout.
For the past three months, Pete has been hospitalized fighting a complex and overwhelming combination of medical conditions, including:
• Myasthenia Gravis
• Congestive Heart Failure
• Degenerative Spinal Stenosis
• Wolff–Parkinson–White Syndrome
• Severe Peripheral Neuropathy with paralysis
Pete is now bedridden and requires advanced, around-the-clock care. After months in the hospital, he is finally scheduled to come home on December 23rd but bringing him home safely and with dignity comes with significant challenges and costs.
Pete lives at home with his wife Genie, and they are determined to face this next chapter together.
What We’ve Already Done
Our family has taken every possible step to prepare their home for Pete’s return, including ramps and safety rails, motorized hospital bed, mobility scooter, home modifications, various accessibility accessories, and a motorized sit-to-stand lift costing $7,200 (as seen in the pictures, paid upfront, reimbursement pending.. potentially).
What Comes Next — and Why We Need Help
At home, Pete will require advanced in-home medical care and ongoing support, including skilled nursing visits, medical coordination, supplies not fully covered by insurance, in-home aides, medications, transportation, and continued accessibility needs.
Because Pete’s condition is medically complex, his care needs are higher, and more expensive than average.
Our Fundraising Goals
$15,000 – Immediate short-term needs to cover uncovered medical supplies, in-home care, medications, and transition costs.
$25,000 – Stabilization and ongoing care to support nursing visits and essential home assistance.
$40,000 – Long-term support and peace of mind to provide a buffer for extended care and future medical needs.
A Final Word from the Heart
Pete has always gone out of his way to help others. He spent his life showing up for his family and facing challenges head-on. Now, he needs help and so does my mother, who stands by his side every day.
If you’re able to donate, we are deeply grateful. If you can’t, sharing this page or keeping Pete in your thoughts and prayers means more than you know.
With gratitude,
The Hires Family
