Help Darriel and Darren Put Their Dad to Rest

My dear friend Darriel McBride and her younger brother, Darren, unexpectedly lost their father the night of Monday, September 7th 2020. Their Dad passed away in Kentucky and we are now raising money to bring him back home to NYC for a proper ceremony.

Darriel and I met back during the summer of 2017 as Fulbright scholars. While I didn’t know then that she’d become one of my closest friends, I’ve always had a deep admiration for who she was as a person. We are beyond friends, Darriel truly is a sister. One of the most genuine people I know, Darriel always keeps it a buck. Her heart is expansive, her brain & talents endless and her soul pure. 

She is not the type to ask for anything- that’s not her style. Darriel has had to work for EVERYTHING with all the cards stacked against her. Raised in the South Bronx she never was suppose to make it. A proud AfroLatinx Mami, my girl is really doing her thing as a NBC Page, an upencoming vegan chef and a writer (just to name a few ventures)! I could go on and on about how dope & accomplished it, but what I want to make clear is this:

I truly cannot tell you all about Darriel's but there is one thing I can say; if it wasn’t for him, there would be no Darriel and for that alone, I am grateful. No matter the relationship with our family, they’ll always be family. We get to choose our friends though- our tribe and I do believe that when your tribe needs you, you step out and show up. For every time Darriel has showed up not only for me, but for her other friends, family, lineage and community, this is the least we can do.

As she arranges to bring her Dad’s body back from out-of-state any donation helps lightenedthe financial load. Her father’s oldest child, this responsibility has fallen all on Darriel. But when you have a tribe, it’s never just you. Whatever you can donate, it helps. I ask that this donation serve to give her Dad the dignified ceremony he deserves and also to provide our girl with the support she so abundantly and without reservation gives to us all.
