My name is Mia Cassidy, I’m the writer and director of Faces, a short film adaptation exploring perception, identity, and the human struggle for connection.
Synopsis: The story follows a 12-year-old boy, William, who struggles with prosopagnosia, or facial blindness. Unable to recognize people's faces, including his own mother's, William attempts to navigate his condition and his mother's efforts to connect, employing deceptive tactics to appear "normal."
When I first came across the short story “Faces” by acclaimed author Aimee Bender (who has personally green-lit our project), I was instantly captivated. The story engages with the concept of our unique inner worlds conflicting with our constantly changing exterior world, a message that spoke to me on a very personal level, having struggled with depersonalization and derealization dissociation during Covid-19.
Developing this project has led me to many fascinating and important conversations with people dealing with prosopagnosia––whether in their inability to recognize faces or to read them, or both. This film is an opportunity for us (my incredible film crew and me) to create art that has a direct impact, and add our own personal spin to Bender’s powerful story, telling the story through William’s perspective.
Beyond William’s moving story is a demand for more social conversations surrounding prosopagnosia, the neurological condition that distorts perception and isolates, and yet still remains under-discussed.
With your financial support, our dream of making this film can become a reality. The money will go toward production costs including locations, equipment, food, post-production, and film festivals.
Thank you so much,
Mia Cassidy
and the FACES team !
