A Honeymoon is supposed to be a celebration of the start of a new life together, not the tragic end of life for your other half and soul mate.
Adam and Heather were married in the presence of their 5 month-old son Joshua, friends, and family on June 25th 2022. It was a joyous celebration. With their hearts set on a beautiful honeymoon in Antigua, Adam and Heather earned their Scuba Diving certifications in anticipation of seeing the unique sites of the Caribbean. Adam was particularly excited to check this activity off of his bucket list.
In what we can only describe as a horrific incident, our brother, Adam Laskey, lost his life while scuba diving on their Honeymoon in Antigua on July 22nd, 2022. This horrible tragedy happened so quickly that we may always be left with questions about what went wrong while under the water. Unfortunately after being taken to the nearest hospital, he did not survive.
His new wife Heather was left distraught, in shock, and stranded alone in another country, without her other half and soul mate. Their 6 month-old son Joshua, was fortunately staying with family while Adam and Heather were on their trip. Adam’s brother Sam was able to fly to Antigua the following day to assist in beginning the process and to escort Heather home, but there is so much more to do that we are just beginning to navigate.
The family are all working hard with the US Embassy and Consulate, to investigate the incident and to determine Adam’s true cause of death. Due to the Country and local protocol in Antigua, this is going to be a several weeks long process to investigate, autopsy, release, and transport his remains before Adam can come home to rest where he belongs.
Following a huge struggle to get clearance from local police, the US Consulate had to step in just to allow Heather and Sam to finally be allowed to view Adam’s body for one last time, three days after the incident, to say goodbye. The viewing was made even more stressful as local Police hovered over them, rushing the emotional goodbye, asking “how much longer?” Heather and Sam then had no other option but to leave him in Antigua and fly home to the United States without him.
The amount of grief and loss we are feeling is nothing compared to what our new sister-in-law is experiencing, which is now compounded by the reality of becoming a widowed mother, and the stressful, expensive, and lengthy process of bringing Adam home. All of this, less than a month after being married.
We are full of questions and anxiously awaiting the autopsy results so we can hope to find some closure in knowing what truly happened that day.
Adam’s death leaves both Heather and their 6 month-old son Joshua behind without their husband and father. As a stay-at-home Mom, Heather and Joshua were dependent on Adam’s income. Their life insurance policy was yet to be setup due to being married less than a month. Heather is now looking at travel costs, international transport fees and funeral expenses. The body transport alone is expected to cost an upward of $20,000.
She needs help. Our help, and your help. This is a tragedy beyond words, and nobody expects these things to happen, least of all to someone so young and someone just starting out as a new husband and father.
Anyone who knew Adam knew how exotic and charismatic he was. He touched the lives of so many. We don’t know how life looks without him in it now, but we do know that his amazing spirit lives on through his pride and joy, his son Joshua. We as his family have all come together to do whatever we can to help them through this senseless tragedy.
