Bringing Biogas to Standing Rock

Hey everyone,

This Thanksgiving Day, I am giving thanks to all the water protectors by heading over to Standing Rock with my biogas partner in crime, T.H. Culhane, founder of Solar C3ITIES (not to be confused with Solar City!), to bring home-scale anaerobic digestion to Standing Rock where people have been cooking mostly on open fires, generating large amounts of smoke that is unhealthy to breath.  Biogas is a completely clean, low emission fuel for cooking.  We will also be delivering a HomeBiogas system to the community of Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th generation keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe Bundle.  We hope this will spark further interest in the incredible promise of biogas to emancipate humanity from fossil fuels— to eleviate poverty (through a affordable DIY energy, fertilizer and waste solution), reduce our dependance on non-renewable energy, and mitigate the staggering amount of waste we generate every year.

Biogas is a natural, renewable alternative to fracking.   Like natural gas, it is a flamable gaseous fuel that can be used for cooking, heating, lighting, or for generating electricity.   It comes from "digesting" organic matter, a biproduct of the same anaerobic micro-organisms that produce the "gas that we pass".  Anaerobic digestion closes the cycle of life by rendering food scraps and other organic residues into a rich organic fertilizer, free of pathogens, returning these excess nutrients back into the food chain, closing the loop.

We believe these decentralized, small scale solutions hold immense potential for the world and hope to set an example for all the people coming to Standing Rock that we can stand up to the oil industry by taking back responsability for energy production, one home at a time.  We can generate energy in a way that is regenerative, cyclical, and integral to the natural way of life.  Please contribute to help us bring this very simple yet profound technology to the historical mobilization at Standing Rock.

How will the money be used?

The funds that we raise will pay for the costs of getting to Standing Rock and Pine Ridge, and purchasing the materials necessary to insulate and heat the digester through the winter months.  The HomeBiogas unit (featured in the photo) is being generously donated.
