Bringing Art to a Refugee Camp

Donation protected
Imagine being forced out of your home, your country, leaving your family behind, and all that you have ever known. There are refugees scattered all around the world at the present moment. And each and everyone has their own story.

My name is Nataly, and I have created an art project for women refugees presently at a camp in Belgium. Collaborating with a woman-friend-photographer Mubaraka, a refugee herself, and currently at that camp; as well as the administration of the camp, all are excited to bring this project to life.

We are raising funds to purchase basic photo cameras which we will give to women at the Refugee camp, allowing them to express and tell their personal stories through photography. Art is therapeutic, and one does not need to be a photographer to be able to tell her story.

While conducting this project, we are hoping to help the women at the camp to remember, daydream, and to look into their future. We will start this project with gatherings, a support group, and talk about the project and its possibilities. We are planning to offer refreshments during the meetings, as well as will be seeking assistance from a social worker.
As well we are hoping to have a show, as the culmination of this project, with the works printed (using the funds raised) and exhibited at the Refugee camp.

Being a photographer myself and the founder of the non-profit organization World Cultures on View, which supports women working in the photographic medium sharing cultural stories, I know how important it can be to use art as personal therapy.

We are being joined by Rise With Art CO. - a photo gallery based in Los Angeles, CA, which at the end of the project will help to provide a gallery space in the DownTown LA for the actual show of the works created by the refugees.

We are very much hoping to get your support, and get this project going!

We see this project as a Pilot. And if all goes well, we would love to continue by conducting such a program at other Refugee camps in the future.

Deeply grateful in advance!
