Recently, while shopping at an antique store, a light fixture (an electrified gasolier) from the 1846 Courthouse was found. Unfortunately, it is very expensive and many miles from home.
Local historian Adam Southern and many others are raising funds to bring this gasolier back to Columbia. To do this, we need your help! The price of the fixture is $5,200. As of 10/21/2020 $500 had been raised online and by mail. We still have a long way to go. With the light being in an antique store, we might not have much time before someone decides to buy it, scattering it to the wind, never to return to Maury County.
Once we raise the funds for the fixture, it will be installed in Elm Springs, a Columbia treasure built in 1835. The home is on the National Register, but needs some love. Until recently, the home was full of offices and not much attention was given to historical accuracy. This fixture would add so much more history and ambiance to the home. The room where it is to be installed would have been Col. Abram Looney’s study. Looney was a local attorney that practice law in the 1846 courthouse and would have passed or sat under this light many times during his career.
Donate what you can as soon as you can. If you don’t want to give online, mail a check to Adam Southern Light Fund, 409 3rd Avenue, Columbia, TN 38401. Thank you for your time and consideration!
