Let's bring Buddy home

Everyone,

Please meet Buddy, a little bundle of joy. He is around 6 months old, mixed breed, with the cutest personality. Despite the happiness and joy he resonates, Buddy is a stray pup in Prishtina, Kosovo. Similar to hundreds and hundreds of other dogs in Kosovo, Buddy is unwanted. He lives in the hallways of an apartment building and never steps outside the neighborhood block (see photos attached) where he was born (I think he is scared of traffic). He lives off food scraps from people in the apartment building.

I met Buddy last month when I visited my family in Kosovo. My love for him was instant. It is impossible not to immediately be drawn to his lovable cuteness. Despite the fact that he has no family, is constantly exposed to danger, and is not properly fed, he is perpetually happy and friendly. I was unable to take Buddy in since I was not in my own home, but I did take care of him while I was there. I fed him properly and played with him every minute of every day.

Buddy is unfortunate to live in Kosovo, where the cultural prejudice against dogs in general, but especially stray dogs, is extremely strong. I tried my hardest to find him a home but he was turned away by everyone I approached. It is unheard of for someone in Kosovo to adopt a stray dog. One day I decided to take Buddy to the vet and was trying to catch a cab, since Buddy was terrified of stepping outside the neighborhood block in which he stays. But no cabs would let me in with him. I had to calm Buddy down, lift him up, and walk 30 minutes to the vet’s office with Buddy in my arms. The looks on people’s faces when seeing me with a stray dog in my arms were shock and dismay. It is because of this mentality along with the airline’s refusal to accommodate me last minute that I was unable to bring Buddy home safe with me.

Returning to US without Buddy was difficult and heartbreaking. I felt like I failed him. I know for a fact that I am Buddy’s only hope for a better life. I worry that it is just a matter of time before someone is fed up with Buddy and remove him from the neighborhood by whatever means. As of right now, I have family who are doing me a favor and feeding Buddy and playing with him to keep him happy while I find a way to take him to Washington DC.

I have talked to pretty much all the rescue organizations for the past 7 days but they do not seem able to help in my situation. I have signed up for travel volunteers who would be willing to travel with Buddy, but it appears that this will take a long time (maybe months), which is risky considering Buddy is a stray. My only option left is the private route through the help of Move One Pet Transportation. The company seems very reliable and able to provide an easy transportation for Buddy. However, this route is costing me a lot. Unable to cover the cost myself, I am asking for help. I know this is a lot to ask, but I am asking anyways because I am desperate to bring Buddy home. If 100 people give just $20, I can bring him home safe. Whatever you can spare would be a wonderful help.

Thank you everyone!

Best,
