Bring running water to rural school in Ghana
Don protégé
Hi there, my name is Natalie Saar. I am a Masters student in Global Public Health living in Sydney Australia. I recently spent some time travelling and volunteering in Africa. During this time I got to know the staff & students at a particular school in a rural community in Ghana called Kodnad International School.
The school is unique because it is a not-for-profit school which accepts students from deprived backgrounds, including orphans, who cannot necessarily pay full school fees.
Now the school is seeking to install a water pump to bring running water to the school grounds. This will enable the building of a small boarding house onto the back of the school where orphans & children of deprived backgrounds can stay throughout the school week.
The boarding house will ensure these children receive appropriate food, shelter & support necessary for their education (which they may not receive at home).
After getting to know the dedicated teachers and owner of this school, I was inspired to raise money for this project. Running water is the key stepping stone for this school to achieve their vision of providing education to children of underprivileged backgrounds in their community.
To help raise money for this project, I have decided to swim in the Cole Classic event on Sunday 2 February 2025. This is a 1 km swim from Shelly Beach to Manly Beach.
We are looking to raise $3000 AUD for this project. Further background on the project and how the funds will be used is provided below.
Having built relationships within the Frankadua community where Kodnad school is located, I can vouch for the legitimacy of this project and trust the funds will be used effectively. See a picture of me below with Joe, mayor of Frankadua township.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the project. I welcome any & all questions! Thank you for your support.

>> Further background on this project
Why does Kodnad school require running water?
Currently there is no running water on the school grounds. Each week staff transport large plastic containers of water to the school for the children to drink.
Bringing running water to the school will involve:
- Drilling a ‘borehole’ deep into the ground at a particular location. This spot has already been selected, a walking distance from the school building.
- Installing a water pump to bring the groundwater up to the surface
- Building a pipe to transport water from the pump directly to the school grounds.
>> How will the funds be used?
We are seeking to raise $3000 AUD in total for the project.
The funds will be used as below, based on local estimates for materials and labour.
- $1200 AUD for water pump: including quality pump, cable, water holes and workmanship
- $700 AUD for plumbing work: including PVC pipe, other necessary materials & workmanship
- $1000 AUD for mason work: including cement, sand, stone & workmanship
- $100 AUD for contingency, including international bank transfer fees
