GRANT WINNERS

On June 4, 2024, Blue Gonella (they/them) and the band Future Flowers won a $10k grant from the Sacramento Office of Arts + Culture (https://filmsac.com/grants/) to create and produce a music video.

Future Flowers is a new all transgender band on Nisenan land, also known as Sacramento, California! Their music is “genre-fluid genderfluid-fluid”, and their lead single “Theystory” is the punk/pop punk/rock genre.

ABOUT THE SONG

Theystory (A play on the word ‘History’) is a song about all the multitudes of emotions and experiences that come with being transexual, nonbinary and/or gender-nonconforming in the world today.

Each and every day, we often experience immense joy paired with heartbreak. Theystory focuses also on the experience of constantly having to part ways from people and situations that no longer serve you… all while knowing in your heart or hearts that none of us is truly free until all of us are free.

This music video serves to add another layer of emotional experience to the song – to visually represent the freedoms we find in ourselves and in each other through creative expression and loving one another.

We, the trans community, find sanctuary in each other's experiences and presence. We aim to represent the joys we find in each other and to contrast this with the struggles that we face with daily transphobia.

This music video is a gift to all trans people and a celebration of the amazing community in Sacramento! It is a validation of our emotions and a reminder that we are never alone in the struggle. For us, by us. We are so beautiful.
