Dear friends and family,
It’s that time of the year again, enjoying the Christmas tree with its beautiful lights and all the magic of Christmas.
Unfortunately, here at Endulen Hospital in Tanzania it has been quite dark at night in the last few weeks. Our solar batteries are not functioning properly and need replacement. Even worse, there is no power for our critical, life saving machines like our oxygen concentrator, our heater for the newborns, or for the lifesaving bubble CPAP machine. If we want to use these critical machines, we must run the generator. This is very expensive and we are forced to ask the patients to pay. The only other choice is to go to another hospital 2 hours away. Like most of us, the Maasai prefer to stay in their own environment in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where they can be close to their family. Are you able to help us to replace the batteries and reduce the unnecessary costs of referral and fuel.

Facts about Endulen Hospital:
- Did you know we are in the rainy season now, grasses are getting higher, the bush is getting thicker, and the animals are getting closer. Without light we don’t see the nearby leopards, lions or elephants which makes it dangerous for the staff to walk to the hospital during the night if there is an emergency.
- Can you imagine if our Maasai guard is scared to sleep in front of the hospital because of the animals, the mzungu doctor (doctor from abroad) is very hesitant to walk to the hospital in the dark!
- Did you know we have a lot of premature deliveries now due to the cold weather, with your help they can stay in their local environment where we can use the baby heaters and oxygen concentrator.
- To run the generator, we need 4L of diesel per hour. Because of the excessive rains we sometimes have to use the generator during the daytime as well.

Vrienden en familie,
Het is bijna kerst; de kerstbomen zijn versierd en ‘s avonds branden er overal lichtjes!
Helaas is het hier in Endulen Hospital in Tanzania de laatste weken ‘s nachts heel donker.
Onze zonne-energie batterijen doen het niet goed meer en dit betekent dat het ziekenhuis ‘s nachts geen elektriciteit heeft. Cruciale apparaten in het ziekenhuis, zoals zuurstofmachines, couveuses, monitoren en beademingsapparatuur, zijn afhankelijk van elektriciteit.
Als we deze levensreddende apparaten ‘s nachts willen gebruiken, dan moet de generator aan. En de generator draait op kostbare diesel.
Omdat het ziekenhuis helaas geen financiële ruimte heeft, moeten patiënten zelf de diesel betalen. Voor veel mensen is dit echter niet haalbaar. De enige andere optie is verwijzen naar een ander ziekenhuis twee uur rijden verderop.
Maar zoals de meesten van ons, willen ook Maasai het liefst dicht bij huis en familie blijven, en willen ze dus het liefst behandeld worden in ons ziekenhuis in de Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
