I’m raising funds to help find Smokey, our pack llama, and bring him home. Smokey is 6 years old, and we raised him from a baby. He was our very first packing llama, has carried our gear on countless backcountry trips and hunts, and is truly part of our family.
Smokey went missing on the night of Sunday, September 2nd, during an elk hunt in the Castle Creek drainage near Cody, Wyoming. A bear came into camp and spooked Smokey while he was staked out. He ran to the end of his tie-out, snapped his heavy-duty lead rope, and disappeared into the dark. In 10 years of packing, we’ve never had a llama that frightened. We searched through the night and stayed at that camp for three more days, but he didn’t come back.
Since then, Smokey has been spotted twice. We believe he’s alive, just lost and scared. Winter is coming, and this is serious wolf and grizzly country. Every day counts, which is why we are asking for help now while there is still a real chance to locate and catch him safely.

How to recognize Smokey:
If you see him, please don’t chase him. He’ll run farther into the timber. Approach slowly and shake a bucket with rocks or pellets to make it sound like feeding time. Note the location with GPS or a dropped pin, take a photo, and call or text [phone redacted] right away.
Mark and Amy Livesay are running this fundraiser and will keep none of the money raised. Any remaining funds will be donated to llama rescue groups and to backcountry trail and horse organizations in the Cody area. We’ll post updates on how the money is spent.
