Bring Sherry Back to Her Beloved Farm

On October 11th, our mom Sherry’s life changed forever. She was in a mowing accident on her farm that resulted in a C5–C6 spinal cord injury. She was airlifted to Medical Center of the Rockies, where she spent 6 hours in surgery as doctors worked to stabilize her spine. After that, she spent 13 long days in the ICU fighting through some of the hardest moments of her life. She is now at Craig Hospital receiving intensive therapy and working harder than anyone we’ve ever seen.

Last week, we sat in two meetings—one discussing her prognosis, and another with her physical and occupational therapists about what bringing her home will look like. Hearing the reality of her recovery and what the future may hold has been overwhelming, heartbreaking, and hopeful all at once.

Our mom is a fighter down to her core. Every single day she pushes through fear, pain, and exhaustion because she refuses to give up. We pray constantly that she will regain motor function in the future, but right now, the reality is that she will come home in a wheelchair and will need extensive equipment and support to live safely.

Sherry’s heart belongs to her 100-year-old farmhouse and the little hobby-farm animals she has poured her love into for years. That home is her sanctuary. But as much as she loves it, it’s simply not built for someone with her level of injury. Today, we walked through the house with a contractor and were hit by how much needs to be done for her to be able to return home—ramps, widened sidewalks, remodeled spaces, and specialized equipment just so she can move through her own home with dignity and independence.

On top of the emotional weight of this injury, the financial burden is enormous—medical bills, everyday bills, therapy costs, and now major home and transportation needs. We also have to purchase a vehicle that can safely transport her to and from appointments and allow her to live everyday life outside of the hospital.

Our dream is to eventually bring the entire farm up to ADA standards so she can continue living the life she loves on the land that has been in our family for over 55 years. But more than anything, we are racing against time to get the critical changes done so she can come home.

This injury has shaken our entire family. Watching the strongest woman we know face the biggest battle of her life has been heartbreaking. But we are determined to keep her life as normal, joyful, and familiar as possible. She deserves to be surrounded by her animals, her family, and the home where she was raised, our grandparents lived and so many memories have been made.

With the holidays approaching, we know everyone is stretched thin. But if you are able to give—even a small amount—it brings us one step closer to getting Sherry back home where she belongs.

To everyone that has donated already, prayed for us, helped in anyway we can’t thank you enough. It truly means the world to us.
