Sebastiana Hernandez-Cox arrived in the United States with asylum at just fourteen years old. From the moment she arrived, she built a life rooted in service, compassion, and community. Through hard work and perseverance, Sebastiana pursued higher education and became a medical assistant at a local community health clinic in Los Angeles and a union member of SEIU Local 721.

At her job, she used her unique gift — fluency in 'Kʼicheʼ, an indigenous Mayan language, and Spanish — to translate for patients who might otherwise have gone unseen or unheard. Her dedication bridged vital communication gaps in healthcare and helped ensure that no one was left behind because of language barriers.

Sebastiana’s heart for service extended far beyond her clinic. She became an advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), raising awareness to prevent the kinds of tragedies that devastate families and communities. Her compassion, strength, and determination touched everyone she met.

Sebastiana built her life and home in Los Angeles with her loving wife, Michelle Gonzalez, surrounded by friends and family who cherish them deeply.

On October 23, 2025, during a routine ICE check-in in Los Angeles, Sebastiana was detained and arrested without warning. She was forced to endure harsh, inhumane conditions, ultimately ending up at the El Paso Processing Center in Texas. Within weeks, she was deported, despite having a request on her case before an immigration judge pending.

Our hearts are heavy as we share Sebastiana’s story. We are raising funds to support her legal fight, help reunite her with her wife Michelle, and cover humanitarian expenses to bring her home safely.
