Sea Glass began as a two-page writing exercise in Olivia Dennehy-Basile’s senior year at NYU: just two unnamed sisters fighting over a wad of cash. What emerged from that seed was something far more layered: a story of generational curses, womanhood, faith, and forgiveness. Like the ocean’s transformation of sharp glass into something smooth and beautiful, Sea Glass explores how women are shaped by the forces around them, often polished down until they’re less jagged, less loud, less messy.
Drawing from Olivia’s lived experience growing up in an Irish-Catholic family, Sea Glass is both deeply personal and broadly resonant. It’s a blend of folklore and Biblical narrative, reimagining the story of Cain and Abel through two sisters, Anne and Imogen, in a raw, darkly funny exploration of grief, guilt, and girlhood.
While many modern stories explore women and grief through a feminist lens, few are willing to dive into the violent, complex world of teenage girlhood without defanging its girls. Anne and Imogen aren’t reduced to tropes or catfights — they are brutal, tender, flawed, and fighting to survive.
This story needs to be told — and we finally have the chance. Thanks to the generosity of The WP Theatre’s Space Program, where Olivia Dennehy-Basile is one of two chosen resident artists, we’ve been given a home for Sea Glass to come to life. But now we need your help.
We’re raising $25,000 to bring Sea Glass to the stage in its full, unflinching vision. Every dollar raised goes directly toward:
- Fair pay for our actors
- Set design and labor
- Lighting, sound, and costumes
- Marketing and outreach
We believe this production serves as a voice for every girl who’s been told to quiet down, smooth over, or hold it all in.
Don't just take it from us: Here are reviews from our reading in December of 2023:
- "Girlhood but in like the messy, awful, screaming, crying, throwing up, Greta Gerwig Girlhood way. You know?"
- "It's an unflinching but hysterical portrayal of women in dysfunctional families. It's like if Martin McDonagh met Sarah Ruhl."
Please donate what you can and help us bring Sea Glass to life. Every share, every dollar, and every bit of support means the world.
Thank you,
The Sea Glass Team
