Bring Sandy to California

Donation protected
This last March, my sister, Sandy Sussman,  suffered a serious stroke, leaving her without the use of both her legs and her right arm.  As those who know Sandy are well aware, her identity is that of an artist.  She is an immensely talented painter who has had a productive career for more than forty years.

Sandy recently moved to Taos, New Mexico with the hope of settling into her final years painting and living in an artist’s community.  After six short months there, she suffered the stroke, was rushed to a hospital and has ended up in a small nursing facility in Albuquerque.  This facility fails to provide necessary rehabilitation or support.  Sandy is isolated and losing motivation.  She needs and deserves better care and to be near those who love her.  In California, besides me, she has family and friends who would be able to offer much-needed support.

Moving an invalid across state lines during a pandemic - or any time - presents challenges, both logistically and financially.  Yet, Sandy is now wait-listed on several California rehabilitation facilities.  There is the potential for improved care. She has already qualified for Medicaid which is currently paying her expenses in New Mexico, but Sandy cannot qualify for financial assistance in California until she is recognized as a resident here.  For this to happen she must be established as a private-pay patient in a California rehab facility for a minimum of two months.  Out-of-pocket expenses for such a facility amount to $325 per diem – approximately $10K per month.

I have every hope that, through collaborative efforts, GoFundMe can bring my sister to a place where she can be in a quality care facility, have support, regain stamina and where she too might find renewed hope.  Hope is strong medicine!

The goal is to be able to have the funds to pay for Sandy's transportation to California and two months of rehabilitative care by October 22, 2020.

Here are examples of what your help would pay for:

$325 covers one day of care in a rehab facility.
$300 is the estimated cost of her plane ticket to California.
$500 is the estimated cost of my plane ticket to fly to Albuquerque and accompany her to California.
$1000 is needed for the crating and shipping of her belongings, including artwork, from Taos to California.
$150 is the estimated cost of me staying in an Airbnb in Taos and Albuquerque for 3 nights while I tend to Sandy’s pre-move affairs.

This is a challenging situation even under ordinary circumstances, and these are extraordinary times.  Deep gratitude in advance for any contribution you can make to help Sandy in this painful situation.  And if you can spread the word, that would be mighty! Every donation is appreciated and none are too small.

With heartfelt thanks,
Eileen, Sandy’s sister

P.S.  Any funds raised beyond the stated goal will be used for Sandy’s living expenses.
